Obedience vs. Disobedience

Devotional done by Ess-Jee from

For many years obedience to the word of God and what it entailed had been a grey area. Many times I got confused myself because; in the one hand Christ died for all our sin and was Holy and Blameless in His sight. On the other hand if you not going to obey the word, the chances are, your going to miss the blessings the Lord planned for you and in some cases even miss out on eternity. So what is going on here? Why it is that especially in the Christian church people are claiming they are followers of Christ, but there actions say something totally different.

So you know that recently released stats, indicate that the Christian Church has the highest  divorce rates in the world. Do you know how many pastors and church leaders leave their wife’s for a younger youth leaders? I know of many leading leaders in the world who have divorced their husbands and still proclaiming they know the truth. The blind is leading the blind.

Many Christians stay together before marriage, saying as the world is saying; Test drive before marriage. Going to bars and rave clubs, smoking, gambling,  the list can go on and on. What happened? Didn’t Jesus say that we ought to follow Him and be Holy because He is Holy?

For the Scriptures say, "You must be holy because I am holy."(1 Peter 1:16)

'For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth. (Leviticus 11:44)

To find the answers were looking for we must go to the word and see what God has to say about this mix generation of Christians.

The Scriptures tell us God cannot lie and He hates all lies.  God says truth is non-negotiable and is fundamental to His law. The Bible goes on to warn all those who call the things God calls evil, "good," and the things God calls good, "evil."  Although there are many examples of this twisting of right and wrong  found in our world today, including lying and deceiving.

"Woe to those who call  evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness;"(Isa 5:20  NKJ)

Jesus says that we must not only be hearers of the word but doers, following His example and not doing what we think is right or feels right.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.(James 1:22)

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.(Mathew 7:24)

"Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?(Luke 6:46)

for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified.(Romans 2:13)

What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? (James 2:14)

Love is a responsibility, freedom is a responsibility. It’s our responsibility to strive to be like the Lord, not out of our own power but to humble ourselves before God and asking Him to help us with this journey of purity. I stepped in that trap trying out of my own strength to be pure and more Holy like Jesus ,but we can do nothing out of our own strength.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 it is not of works, so that no one can boast.

Titus 3:5-7 he saved us, not by works of righteousness that we have done but on the basis of his mercy, through the washing of the new birth and the renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us in full measure through Jesus Christ our Savior. 7 And so, since we have been justified by his grace, we become heirs with the confident expectation of eternal life.

Romans 4:1-5 What then shall we say that Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh, has discovered regarding this matter? 2 For if Abraham was declared righteous by the works of the law, he has something to boast about (but not before God). 3 For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to the one who works, his pay is not credited due to grace but due to obligation. 5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous, his faith is credited as righteousness

David also came to this marker in the road trying to be more like God, but every time he tried he failed, then he came to this conclusion.

“The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken (humble) spirit and repentant heart, O God.” Psalm 51:17

The Lord knows the motive of every human heart on this earth. He knows what your motives are if your doing something. So if you really strive to be Holy and you asked the Lord; Lord I don’t want to sin anymore, you already died for me so that I can be Holy like You. You have already done everything for me , all I have to do is accept your plan for my Life and get rid of my own pride and selfishness desires, because its against Your will for me.

“God opposes the proud but favors the humble.”James 4:6 (Proverbs 3:34)

"I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve."(Jeremiah 17:10)

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."(1 Samuel 16:7)

"As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.( 1 Chronicles 28:9)

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts ;(Psalm 139:23

The Lord purchased us with His own blood; He bought us, to be His children and not our own.

"Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.(Acts 20:28)

I hear of many people standing for their marriages getting weary and want to give up. The Lord asked each of us to be obedient to Him and His word is that too much to ask?

Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.(Romans 12:1)

Being inconvenience for a season. He gave up everything for us so that we can life in total freedom. Is the prize or sacrifice He wants for us to Big? Is it because it place us in inconvenience or to follow the Lord is too hard because it means we must climb out of our comfort Zones?

You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.(1 Corinnthians 7:23)

you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.(1 Corinthians 6:20)

If we stop standing for our marriages or finances or whatever, were saying that Gods word is a lie and that God can’t do what He says in His word. Our marriage problems or what other problem is too big for God to handle? NONSENSE! God is God Almighty, He is, was and will always be. Nothing, I will say again, nothing, is Impossible for Him. Trust God with your whole heart. He will come through for you and your family.

Its time Church, that we will rise up and stop mixing Gods standards with the world standards. Lets get out of the world and go into Gods Kingdom , He is waiting. Stop mourning and complaining and start focusing on Jesus, He is our strength and Joy.

In short, start looking to God for your answers you need, start following His statues and ordinances, stop all secret sins and humble yourself before God. He will turn His ear to you. He sacrifices Himself for us so don’t you think we must do the same for Him?
