Follow Me

Devotional done by Ess-Jee from standforyourmarriage.org

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." Mathew 4:19

What would you do if Jesus told you to leave everything for Him? Most Christians will say, “We already are followers of Christ”. My question to you is are you really following Him?

Most of us follow Jesus from inside our comfort zones. In order to really follow Jesus the way He intended us to will cost a price. In the Bible, there is a story of a rich young man who thought he did everything that was expected from him. He asked Jesus what more he can do to inherit the kingdom of Jesus, and Jesus said to leave everything and Follow Me.

Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments." "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, " 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19honor your father and mother,'[d] and 'love your neighbour as yourself.20"All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?" 21Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."22When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Mathew 16:22

Many Christians struggle to commit their lives to Jesus. They still follow their own hopes and dreams. The only way we are ever going to experience God’s fullness in our lives, is when we completely and utterly surrender ourselves to God, thereby accepting His plans and dreams for our lives. When God speaks to us we must listen to and obey Him. The plans He has for us are always for our good, to prosper and not to harm us. God is love, and all He wants for us is goodness and peace. To truly be a follower of Christ takes commitment and action. Proclaiming something and acting it out are two very different scenarios.

James 2:26 states:”For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

Talk is cheap; do you act out your faith to a fallen world daily? Or are you a situational Christian/Stander that only knows Christ when things in your life get tough? In bad times or good, we have to stop putting The Lord in the backseat.

Standers for Christ, its time we take up our stance with Jesus. Being a lukewarm Christian is very dangerous.

So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth. Revelation 3:16

Many standers are backsliding because they’re hardening themselves to God’s truths and standards. Being disobedient to the Lord places a distance between us and Him. The Lord wants to help us in every situation but He needs us to be obedient to Him and His word. Jesus sacrificed Himself for us; don’t you think we owe it to Him to sacrifice our lives for Him?

Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?
2 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV)

See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. Hebrews 3:12-13 (NIV)

Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. Proverbs 4:13(NIV)

Pick up your cross and follow Jesus. He is the forerunner, follow Him and you will find new strength in His footsteps. He is awesome. Trust in Him and you will see His Fingerprint on your life. The Kingdom of God doesn’t come by words only, but by power and action. So will you dare to truly follow Jesus?

All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. Matthew 10:22 (NIV)

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. Timothy 4:15-17(NIV)
