 Gomer the Runner

Devotional done by Ess-Jee from standforyourmarriage.org

Do you have a running Gomer in Your life?

Don’t understand? Ok let me explain. Let’s look at what is the meaning of the word running:

Dickson Dictionary:

“the act of a person or thing that runs (in various senses); racing, managing, proceeding, etc.”

So running is a form of maybe running towards something or it could be running away from something, in this case I’m talking of someone running away from something. Many people nowadays seem to have a lack of commitment. Why don’t people fight for what they believed in anymore, or for something they love or adore?

I think the answer to our question is simple , this generation of people are so self centred and self pleasing , that if something gets a bit challenging we don’t even try to work things out we simply just give up and try something new, maybe this time it will work. The world became such an fast pace place were everything must be done yesterday ,so no wonder we think that our relationships must also be like fast food , fast and easy to get and easy to fulfil our needs.

The love story of Hosea and Gomer is certainly one of the most forgotten stories in the Bible. What would you have done, if before you got married in the future, the Lord came to you and told you that the women / man your about to get married to , are going to leave you after 2 years and will cheat you and abuse you and will certainly hate you , with all this knowledge before hand will you still choose to marry that person? Or will you choose to say :“no matter because I choose to love them unconditionally , no matter what happens I choose to love them still”.

One day Hosea came home and found a note from Gomer: she had decided to find the happiness she felt she deserved, and she was leaving him and the children to follow the man “she really loved.”  What could Hosea have done ? Nothing. Because Gomer was deceived believing that she had other options other than Hosea and her children, the enemy deceived her by telling her she don’t have to submit to Hosea she’s missing out of all the fun In the world.

Today many couples get married thinking that divorce is a possibility. Some are quite open about it. “If it doesn’t work out, then we will get a divorce.” They obviously do not understand God’s hatred for divorce and the many consequences that follow.

Another dangerous tendency in wealthy societies is for the husband and wife to think they are marrying for life, but when troubling times come, they begin to think of separation and divorce as real possibilities. In newlywed bliss, the excitement of a new home or a new baby, they might not think this way. When troubles escalate the husband starts to imagine what it would be like with that other woman. The wife tries to think through her financial situation to see if she can support herself. They are not fully committed to oneness. Every marriage faces challenges. How we respond to the challenges depends on what we really believe. In the end this couple shows that they do not really believe that they are one for life. This is seen by the contemplation of other options in troubles.

Some couples are deeply shocked when these thoughts of divorce are first brought up. Although it may seem impossible for a marriage to turn around, it can. The couple can sort things out by focusing on the truth of their oneness. They need to set their hearts upon living by their marriage vows. This is the way it is for every married couple. When we decide to live by the fact of oneness, then the marriage can hold together. If however, either spouse is willing to accept the temptation to live apart from God’s binding truth and choose a path separate from the spouse, then the couple will experience great turmoil.

So Gomer left her husband and Children to chase her lovers and shellfishes desires , she went from lover to lover but never finding that satisfaction she was looking for , then on a day she had a lover who couldn’t buy her all the clothes or jewellery she wanted. It got so bad that Gomer and her lover was down and out , the lover went to a nearby pub and tried to drink away all his problems while Gomer was at home , emotionally and spiritually crippled. The Lord spoke to Hosea and told him his wife was in great need, he showed Hosea were Gomers lover was and Hosea went to the Lover , giving him money to give to Gormer and told him to take good care of her , sjo.

Gomers lover took the money and ran off with it leaving Gomer abandoned with out any money or food she was down and out, not knowing what is going to happen to Her, she came to a point that she couldn’t run any more, she ran herself into a brick wall. The landlord came and because she was so in debt and had no money the Land Lord took her and sold her as a slave. And we know who bought her from the Landlord , her husband Hosea. I bet you didn’t see that one coming?

You see dear reader that our ways aren’t the Lords Ways .

Isaiah 55:8

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD.

The Lord had a plan with Hosea’s wayward spouse, when she left He already had a plan in motion to bring her to a place of repentance and to see the errors of her ways. The same way the Lord had a plan when we sinned right at the beginning in genesis, eating from the tree of , knowledge of good and evil.

Genesis 3:15

And there will be war between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed: by him will your head be crushed

The seed the writer is talking about is the birth and death of Jesus Christ who had taken away the dividing wall between us and God. Our God is a God of restoration and reconciliation, what he has done for Hosea and so many other hurting families He can and will do for you and your family. May this Holiday season be the seasons were many prodigals come to a dead end and give up there running shoes for Gods running shoes.

Dear Father in heaven we come boldly to your throne of grace and mercy , father may You touch many prodigal children today who are running away from you , may they find that the only race worthy of running is the race we run for you any other races we run is empty. May you fill us with Your love and grace so that we can run the race you set for us with patience and endurances, help us to always keep our eyes on you and you only. We love You Lord .In Jesus name we Pray Amen.

Hebrew 12:1 - 3

12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,1 we must get rid of every

weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us, 12:2 keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.2 12:3 Think of

him who endured such opposition against himself by sinners, so that you may not grow weary in your souls and give up.
