For better and for worse

Devotional done by Ess-Jee from

Husbands Pledge

______, I love you and I know that this love is from God. Because of this, I want to be your husband so that we might serve Christ together. Through all of the uncertainties and trials of the present and future, I promise to be faithful to you and love you. I promise to guide and protect you as Christ does his church, as long as we both shall live. God's Word gives us the perfect example of this love in Christ's death for the Church. I shall try always, with God's help, to show you this same kind of love, for I know that in His sight we will both be one.

Wife’s Pledge

On this special day, _____, I am reminded of the verse James 1:17 which says, "Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of Lights with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow." With a gift such as you, I know that many new responsibilities face me. In I Corinthians, it explains "It is required of a steward to be found trustworthy." I cannot do this on my own strength, _______, but by God's grace and power working within me I desire to be trustworthy as your wife by following your leading submissively, even as unto Christ, loving and serving you in all circumstances as long as He give me life on this earth.

Gods Pledge

. . . God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” For the sake of My great name, I the LORD will not reject you , because I the LORD was pleased to make you MY own. All that I give YOU will come to you, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.  . . . And this is the will of him who sent me that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. I give you eternal life, and you shall never perish; no one can snatch you out of my hand. My Father, who has given you to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch you out of my Father’s hand. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you."(Deuteronomy 31;6 B, Hebrews 13:5,1 Samuel 12:22 , John 6:37, John 10:28)

Wow, three different pledges, all three have the same undertone, for better and for worse. When one enters into marriage one starts to recognize that marriage is more than two people signing legal papers, stating that they are legally married. It’s a Covenant between three parties; Husband, wife and God. Marriage symbolizes the relationship that Christ has with His church.

When my marriage problems started I didn’t really understand what the words meant; “for better and for worse”. Easy to say for thousands of couples around the world, but to act those words out is a whole different ball game. Most of the time when things are going great in a relationship, one can thrive to Love the other, but if the other one doesn’t return the love, will you still love them all the same? For most if one doesn’t receive love, one will not love the other. Jesus loved us for better and for worse.

When they beated Him, He loved, When they accused Him, He loved, When they hated Him, He loved and when they crucified Him, He asked God to forgive them because they don’t know what they are doing. The same love Jesus has for us He wants us to have for our spouses.

It is always easy to serve God when things go easy with us and we can serve Him out of our comfort zones. But when things get a bit stormy around us, we harden ourselves to God and accuse Him for all our misfortune. We blame Him for everything. The same is with marriage when things get tough; it’s always easy to point the finger to our spouses, and not noticing the beams in our own eyes.

When we start humbling ourselves before God, repenting from all our wrongs and serving our spouses out of a servant heart, like Jesus did. Then one starts to understand what God meant, by saying; Love your spouse like Jesus loved the church. Loving us out of an unconditional heart. Putting another human beings needs and desires above your own. Making a choice to love them, no matter what.

This week is a very special week. Please make some time this week to remember what Jesus did for us. Man He gave us everything, don’t you think we owe it to Him, to give up everything For Him and the one we pledge our love to?
