The Race

Cor 9:24-27 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. NIV

Did you know that everyone of us living on earth is in a Race? It doesn’t matter whether you want to run in it or not, you are still a participant. Many people called by God to stand for their marriage, often get weary and dismayed. Why? Because they don’t put their focus on Jesus. There is only one way we can go the distance for our victory, and that is by following Jesus. Just last week I wondered why we in the western Churches struggle to live in the total victory that God already gave us through Jesus 2000 years ago. The revelation I had was that we don’t have the endurance, meaning to go all the way. In the Bible, most of the people that had their promises fulfilled, trusted God for the outcome and it didn’t matter to them what they had to do. They knew that God will come through; all they had to do was to hang on to Him.

We live in an era where most people want things done yesterday. So imagine if you had to wait for the Lord for your promise, even though it may take years. That’s why when some people trust God with something and He doesn’t provide an answer according to their time frame, they are quick to dismiss the Word of God, choosing to do things their way.

I watched a movie a while ago about a farmer who trusted God for 3 years for his financial breakthrough. He prayed and prayed and prayed. He eventually decided that God isn’t helping and took matters into his own hands. He joined a party of men capturing criminals for a living. They were rewarded with gold and silver upon taking the captives to the sheriff’s office.

To make a long story short, the farmer caught a criminal and with great effort got him to the train bound for the county jail. In the end though, he unfortunately got killed in the ensuing fire fight that broke out between him and the captive’s gang. This meant leaving his wife and family without a husband and father, and without an income.

You see, when we try to do things our way we mess it up. Why don’t we start running the race of life that God wants us to run? Not our way but His way.

Lets take a look how God wants us to run the race;

1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that  hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him  who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (Hebrews 12)

The main phrases from this part of scripture that really stand out to me are the following;

Obedience; Jesus wants us to follow His example, and if we really love Him we will stop sinning, asked Him to cleanse us.

Focus; where is your focus when the enemy attacks you, or circumstances get out of hand?

Jesus is our forerunner. He has already done everything for us on the cross. Will you dare to believe that nothing is impossible for God? He can, and will heal and resurrect your marriage, or any other giant you may be facing today.

So Church, don’t you think the time for mere pacing, or running in the wrong direction has come to an end? Let’s run this race with endurance and perseverance, following our forerunner Jesus. Let’s start the race, and this time to finish it.
